Quit Smoking

Here's one you hear a lot..."My resolution this year is to quit smoking!" So I bought my first pack of cigarettes (ok, so they're cloves) ever. And I gotta say I was a little shocked at how expensive these things are. Oh well, $7.50 for the sake of art is not bad ;-)

New Years Eve tonight! Everyone got their resolutions in line?

Tuesday, December 30, 2008

So the story behind tonight's photo is that in the spirit of New Years (which is tomorrow, eeek), I'm doing the next few photos about New Years' Resolutions. I don't tend to set them so I'm going to be exploring the most common ones for the next few days. This year will probably be no exception (in not having a resolution...maybe I should try to love my job more). Nonetheless, I think it's a great opportunity for photos!

Check back for the next ones in the series :-) I hope everyone has great plans for tomorrow. Although I don't get to do what I had hoped, I'm sure I'll still have a good night.

I wish I could take credit for this idea but I saw it in another 365 and instantly loved it! First of all, anyone who knows me well knows my affection for sprinkles, or anything colorful. So I found the stickiest lip gloss I had and slathered up my lips before plunging into the sprinkles. One of the most fun shoots so far, haha! Can't say it's exactly how I wanted the photo to turn out but oh well. This would be a good time for me to use a macro lens, if only I had one. I have had my eye on one for the past week or so and just may end up ordering it...

Ok so I forgot to post a picture yesterday. It wasn't that it was a busy day, I just wasn't feeling it. I'm running out of ideas already...or at least today. It'll come back to me I'm sure. So, read my hand as I don't know what to take a photo of, ha!

Alex and I saw Slumdog Millionaire last night and it was awesome! One of the best movies I've seen in a long time! It was really intense and I totally loved the music in it. I highly recommend it to everyone

I'm feeling whimsical and gymnastic today! Hopefully this energy will stick with me. I'm so looking forward to my next week off, woohoo! Alex and I are trying to work in a trip to NYC and see Spamalot. We'll see :-)

Merry Christmas!

I'll post the picture of myself first. This is just me getting ready to head to Alex's parents' house for Christmas dinner.

This is just a cute ornament on their tree that always looks so nice!

The sticky buns that always accompany Christmas at my parents' house so I've taken over the tradition

Another ornament that I didn't notice until I zoomed in on later that you can see my reflection in. It's pretty cool!

Some red velvet cupcakes I tried to make that didn't really turn out as I'd hoped. Oh well

There's a cross-section of the cake.

Anyway, I got a new camera bag that I'm super psyched about!! It's awesome. I also got beautiful earrings from Alex, a jewelry box and floor mats for my (relatively) new car. And lots of great stocking stuffer stuff, like the Cute Overload calendar! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!!

Merry Christmas Eve!

Merry Xmas Eve, y'all! Alex and I are getting ready to hit the hay and watch some South Park. We had dinner at his parents house and just hung out with them. It was nice :-) We also did our gift exchange because my family and his family will be having a big dinner tomorrow.

This is Alex's and my first Christmas together :-) We are both really looking forward to it. I've got the sticky buns all set for tomorrow morning (a family tradition for me). Mom always made sticky buns and that was all we had for breakfast. Super healthy, I know!

Anyway, I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas morning and you get to enjoy all the little things you also enjoyed as a child. Tomorrow I hope to elaborate on some more "Christmasy" stuff. Goodnite!!

Do not open until Christmas

Christmas is 2 days away...almost one day away. Seems it really crept up on me, as it always does. I really enjoyed today off and will definitely enjoy the rest of my time off. It was an extremely lazy day. Tomorrow will be a bit more productive...I promise

Perhaps I'll have a new hair do to sport in my photos

This is how excited I am that I only worked a half day today and am off until January 5th! Yup, you heard me right, January 5th. It's pretty sweet being a state employee.

Will be baking up a storm tomorrow, can't wait! Should produce some great photos too

Sunday, December 21, 2008

Lazy post tonight. Back to work tomorrow...maybe only for half day. No work Tuesday or the rest of the week, or the following week in fact. I get almost 2 weeks off! Woooo!

It is a MUCH needed break...

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

Alex and I went ice skating tonight! So here's a quick picture of us in front of the tree. Not super imaginative, I know. Today was crazy with running around in all the madness.

We did get some awesome sushi at one of my favorite places though, Obi in Reston. Amazing sushi. I highly recommend the Zen Roll; it has sweet potato, tempura and cream cheese. DElicious!! Definitely my favorite sushi roll. I also tried one of their specials which was the Vegas Roll, which was massive and awesome. It was avocado, unagi (eel), cream cheese, spicy eel sauce and the whole thing was fried (tempura). Pretty sweet

The countdown to Christmas begins...

Longest week EVER

Is it just me or was this the longest week ever? Anyway, it's finally Friday so while Alex was making dinner (that's right, he cooks), I headed to Whole Foods to pick up some beer. I got a few new things for Alex but Sapporo for me. I'm usually not very adventurous with my beers :-) Ok so maybe I just ended up drinking mostly wine but I had about half the Sapporo.

I have to give the credit to Alex for this one. While both inebriated, I explained to him what kind of shot I wanted and he produced this on his first shot. Not bad, methinks! In fact, I really like it :-) I hope everyone's having a great Friday!

I need practice

Ok, well, my plan for tonight was to take a picture of my face straight on and then edit it in Photoshop, giving myself a mirror image of one side of my face. When I was taking a drawing class my last semester at Mason, we were told that people with more symmetrical faces are usually perceived as being more beautiful/attractive. So I wanted to make my face symmetrical to see how it looks.

As it turns out, my face is so UN-symmetrical that it can't even be least by me. It looked horrid and freakish! So I turned to using Biscuit for a quick shot. It's kind of a crutch but I didn't have the patience to do anything really involved tonight.

This has been the slowest week ever and I'm so glad Friday is finally here. It feels like it's taken twice as long for this week to go by as it normally does.

So tonight's shoot was actually a lot of fun and I got some help from Alex! I decided I want to try to capture myself mid jump onto the bed. After many failed attempts to edit it in a cool way in Photoshop, I gave up and decided to just leave it at this. And here are some flops from the shoot that I thought were funny...

Flipping onto the bed while almost falling back off it, hence my intense face

And this one's intense, well, just because jumping on beds is intense! Enjoy!!

So here's the adorable apron that Marie (Alex's mom) got me for our cookie baking day! What do you think? And yes, if you look closely, you can see that the spatula has a cupcake on it too. That was also a gift from Marie but for my birthday this past year. She's so great! Here's another shot of it in color...

It's so me! I wanted to capture a bit of the '50s housewife but it's tough without a beehive haircut and a roast in my hand. Anyway, Happy Tuesday!

PS, these are all viewed much better in large size if you click on them

Back on track!

Ok, now I'm all caught up and here's today's photo. So I'm home sick today...caught a cold or something. But I got bored so I decided to play with makeup a bit. Just some funky colors (that didn't show up so well in the photo) and lots of eye liner.

And no I'm not naked, I'm wearing a tube top

Back in time...

Alright so this is Saturday's post. I'm going back in time to make up for lost time.

Anyway, pretty self-explanatory...these are the Christmas M&M's, dark chocolate of course. I LOVE these and they really don't last long in this apartment. This was the last little bit in the bowl...looks a little like I'm giving them up as an offering, haha. Those little buggers are deadly :-)

I'm tellin' ya, it's tough to get perspective like that in a self-portrait. It took a few different takes before it turned out how I wanted.

I spent Saturday baking all kinds of goodies with Alex's mom. We made double chocolate biscotti, gingerbread biscotti, white chocolate pretzel bark, snickerdoodles, and chocolate toffee cookies. The chocolate toffee cookies are ridiculously rich! LOVE 'em! Marie also got me an adorable apron for baking in. Maybe I'll use that for a future post. It's pretty darn cute!

A little behind...

I know, I know. I fell a little behind but I will be doing 2 posts to make up for it. This picture is from yesterday when I went snowboarding at Wisp with some friends. It was a great time! Lift tickets were $7!! I was at the top of the mountain and enjoying a run by myself. I didn't get a chance to take a better picture but it had to be an in-the-moment shot so there you go!

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

FLUFF! For those of you taking finals, that just might be what you're filling up your essays with! I know I would be. But alas, this is a different type of fluff; my favorite type of fluff. On a list of things I can't live without, this is pretty damn near the top. Seriously. I was so excited when I saw this at Target because Safeway doesn't sell these monstrous containers...only small ones. It's dirt cheap too...less than $2. I love love love it!

On another note, Alex and I just watched "The Strangers" and it was mighty scary. I was jumpy the whole time. I really liked it because it was scary without being gory (save for the end of the movie) like so many "scary" movies nowadays. I feel like this one was a legitimately scary movie. It definitely had me on the edge of my seat!

I'm still looking for the missing piece to my snowboard. I am going to scour all the local places that sell winter sports gear to see if I can maybe find a replacement piece. It's such a small and seemingly insignificant piece, which is why I'm sure it got misplaced.

Oh well. Happy Friday!

"The feelings disappear"

Let's just say it hasn't been the best week. Work is a major source of stress in my life right now so it brings down all others...

There's a small chance I may get to go snowboarding, which for me is so therapeutic. When I snowboard, nothing else goes on. If the mountain isn't too busy, I can focus on only the sound of my board cutting its' edges into the snow. I can focus on my technique and balance. Balance is a great thing and I hope my life comes back into balance soon...

The sandman has come and it is time for bed...

A little wine never hurt either ;-)

My element

Sometimes my job just makes me feel a little out of element that is. There's a lot of stuff I'd much rather be doing; like photography. Regardless, I'm extremely fortunate to have a job right now. I just get a little burnt out occasionally

Tomorrow's picture will be better, I promise! I just woke up from a nap and am looking forward to getting into bed and it's only 9!

Somethin's cookin!

What is Marley doing in the kitchen?!

Don't get your panties (or Jockeys) in a bunch, it's powdered sugar ;-) I'm baking cookies, silly! Tomorrow is the GMU ITU Department Christmas party, woohoo! It's a great excuse for me to bake. Who could resist little frosted stars and candy canes? I hope they are a hit!

I saw something crazy today...I was driving down Main Street (a divided highway at this point) in Fairfax when I saw this woman driving on the other side of the road in the wrong direction! And to top it off, she almost hit a cop on a motorcycle!! He looked absolutely livid! He completely stopped traffic, made her turn around and gave her ass a ticket! Sheesh, women like her make women everywhere look bad.

On another note, I was bored at work today (not to mention ridiculously tired) and was thinking about how silly the word "neat" is...not in the sense of something being clean and tidy, but that something is interesting. It's such a boring word. "Oh, NEAT!" It's like "great"...that one's lame too...

It's time for me to do something else. Until tomorrow...

Red Rubber Ball

Well, maybe it's not red, but it's close. This is pretty self-explanatory but Alex and I just put up our tree a few days ago and this is my favorite of the ornaments we got! I LOVE the color. They make me think of orange Skittles, which is just awesome! I thought they just look delicious :-)

I love the holidays...and pedicures with Roni! My tootsies are feeling good!

HOT Pockets

This one's for Cassidy. In our many trips to weddings, we end up talking about the most random stuff and finding ourselves in bumblescum towns, passing by the B-Bizzle and Tizzle as Cassidy calls it. The traffic will be a "shit-storm" and we'll sing our own versions of "Lumberjack", formally known as "Sexy Back" and "Sweet Caroline"..."this bride's drunk!".

Anyway, one of our discussions came to Hot Pockets and I told Cassidy how I make a mean Lean Pocket and pretty much can't live without them. Especially cheeseburger flavor!

Here's to the fun times we've had at the weddings!

It's Friday!! I didn't sleep much the past two nights but slept like a champ last night so I'm feeling pretty good today. Today's picture is pretty obvious...I have my engagement ring in my mouth. I love this ring! If anybody doesn't know the story, this is how it all happened...

Alex told me he was going to be busy helping a friend move a couch all morning but instead he was buying my ring. He called me in the afternoon to see if I wanted to go to Meadowlark Gardens (a great park in Vienna). "Sure, want me to meet you at your house?" I asked. He offered to pick me up and that's when I knew something was up.

He seemed a bit nervous in the car and very focused! I looked down and in between his car's center console and the seat was a receipt from Jared's. I though it was mine because Alex had bought me a necklace from there so I pulled it out. "Oh hey! I left my thing in here". Alex gave me a terrified, deer-in-the-headlights look and the only thing he could blurt out was "NO!" I put it back and we rode quietly the rest of the way. I definitely knew something was up!

We arrived at Meadowlark and Alex seemed to know right where he wanted to go. There is this small winding path that leads to the top of a hill overlooking the rest of the gardens. It's beautiful! The last time we'd been there, we'd had a race to the top. "Race you to the top!" I challenged. He smiled and lead me up the spiral path. Once at the top, we sat on the bench and I hopped up to snap a few pictures of the flowers surrounding us. "I got you something to go with your new dress", he said. It was our second anniversary and we were going on a dinner cruise that night to celebrate. I turned around with a smile on my face and he was down on one knee and well, you know how it goes from here!

Anyway, long winded explanation, but that's what it is. And now you know :-)

Hello World!

Well, here goes nothing.

For a few months I've wanted to do a project. I've seen it done so many times, however I have decided it's still something I really want to do.

Ok, here's the idea: I take a picture of myself every day for a year. Call it 365 Me. And as far as the name of my blog, someone who loves taking photos is typically called a Shutterbug. Well, I figure since this will feature mostly my "mug", that's what I'll be...a Shutter Mug. So I think it will be a lot of fun, really try my patience and time, and occasionally, I'll get a bit nerdy. Those of you who know anything about programming will understand the title to my post...

With each post I'll give a short (or long) explanation of why I took the photo so I'll start with the first one...

I took this picture early in the morning before I left for work. It is kind of to say "This is me!" and "Am I really going to be able to do this?"

I hope to keep up with this. I think it will be a test of my self discipline
